Reading E-Books

Reading E-Books is not as hard as it seems...

Getting used to reading Electronic Books takes a bit of mind alteration, especially for folks born before the Edsel.  Here are a few attacks that you can choose from:

Simply read the E-Book off your computer screen after you have pushed the “Download” button and saved it.

Or convert the file to one of the popular E-Readers like Amazon’s Kindle or Barnes & Noble's Nook.  In a few years, these gadgets will be as universal as iPods and cell phones.

Or read the book directly off a cell phone, iPhone, Blackberry etc.

Or print out the book and read it in manuscript form on paper.

Or use Melissa DeFilippi’s method of converting the book into a normal size, two-sided real book (this method uses only one-quarter the amount of paper that the manuscript takes).

Melissa’s method—How to print a book:

  1. Go to the Authors Page here at Brown Fedora Books
  2. Select a book and download
  3. Open document, hit "file" then "print"
  4. Under page handling, select "booklet print" for page scaling
  5. Under page handling, select "front side only" for booklet subset
  6. Under print range, make sure the "reverse order box" is NOT checked (so front page prints first)
  7. Print the document
  8. Place the printed document into your paper fee tray so that you can print on the back side of the document.  This may vary by printer e.g. for my printer, I place the document in the tray printed side up and the top of the page is on the right side
  9. Under page handling, select "booklet print" for page scaling
  10. Under page handling, select "backside only" for booklet subset
  11. Under print range, make sure the "reverse order box" IS checked (so back page prints first)
  12. Print the document
  13. Manually reverse the pages - i.e. put the first page on the bottom
  14. The document will now read like a book when you fold it in half
  15. Bring the document to Staples or other copy center
  16. They will cut the document down the middle, place the left side on top of the right and bind it.  You can also have them put a front and back cover on it to protect the pages.
  17. Enjoy a good book on paper!
